It can be hard to maintain perspective in a difficult situation, especially if you’re overcome with feelings of anxiety and overwhelm. It takes a lot of practice to be able to step back, remove yourself from your dilemma, and take in the view from afar, but it is possible to do this!
Sometimes when my life feels like it is falling apart and I get overwhelmed, it can feel like like I'm standing in the middle of the road during a mega thunderstorm. It's scary. It's uncomfortable. It feels like I'm getting so wet that my clothes will never dry, that my hair will remain soaked forever and ever. It's in those moments that I try to take a step back, and remember that nothing lasts forever - not the good stuff and not the bad stuff, either.
What would happen to your state of mind if the next time you're going through an overwhelming situation, you imagine yourself stepping out of the middle of the road and seeking shelter? Can you image the relief it might bring you? If you're able to stay dry and watch the thunderstorm taking place through the window, it may seem like a totally different kind of storm. One that you can observe, instead of be engulfed by. You can still experience the storm without getting soaked. Maybe you’ll even be able to see the sun peeking through the clouds... or maybe not, it might take a long time for the sun to come out. But that's ok, because even if the storm lasts for a while, you won't be in the middle of it. You'll be watching it from a distance, through the window while you're safe and sheltered, and you know it won’t last forever because the sun always comes out after a storm.
