Have you ever noticed how nature seems so confident in the way that it grows? The harsh, imperfectly defined lines of tree branches that assert themselves in nature are inspiring in their boldness, existing in the only way they know how to, without consideration for being “too much” or “too little” of anything. The way that nature is able to just be, as it was intended, without any expectations, is inspiring.

Ram Dass's words about the beauty of trees and people comes to mind:

“When you go out into the woods, and you look at trees, you see all these different trees. And some of them are bent, and some of them are straight, and some of them are evergreens, and some of them are whatever. And you look at the tree and you allow it. You see why it is the way it is. You sort of understand that it didn’t get enough light, and so it turned that way. And you don’t get all emotional about it. You just allow it. You appreciate the tree.

The minute you get near humans, you lose all that. And you are constantly saying ‘You are too this, or I’m too this.’ That judgment mind comes in. And so I practice turning people into trees. Which means appreciating them just the way they are.” -Ram Dass

All the trees are different. We are all different. Each tree is beautiful. Each one of us is beautiful. The trees have a magical effect when they exist together in one space - each one is special and different, but it is the collectiveness of them that creates a sense of peace and calmness, even if the group, as a whole, is a chaotic mess of overlapping branches and trunks. This is the inspiration behind this painting, that each spill, brushstroke and drip is interesting on it's own, but together, there is something greater to behold.
