This painting is about water. It’s ability to adapt to any space or vessel because of its fluidity, and its tendency to react to any environment because of its chemistry. Water can be in constant motion, or it can be perfectly still. It can be raging and bold and full of energy. It can be calm and peaceful, motionless and serene. It can be contained in a small glass or it can occupy an entire ocean. It can be gaseous or it can be solid. It’s versatility is inspiring.

To be like water is to be adaptive, to go with the flow, so to speak, in any situation. I think of the way that water always finds a way to move forward and when it is met with a barrier, water will move in another direction, go around, or better yet, find even the smallest of cracks or openings available and go right through. It will seep into the crevice, and without any extra force or added exertion, it will continue to be present, to move forward, and over time, it will erode a crevice until it becomes a crack, and it will have created more space for itself to move through freely. In this case, water is patient, and it perseveres. But water can also smash up against a barrier with such intense force that it knocks down a concrete wall in a single blow. Water can be strong, fierce, intentional and unabashed.

This painting is about honouring the adaptability of water, and recognizing that no matter which state or form water has taken on, it is always bold in its purpose to move forward, no matter what.
