There is something distinctly glamorous about Miami at night, but during the day, it’s all about salty beach hair, sandy ankles and fish tacos. Those long walks along Ocean Boulevard admiring the colourful lifeguard huts while the sun reflects off the water - there’s something understated and glamorous about that, too, in a way that only makes sense in Miami.

There is so much light in Miami. The street lights that flood the back doors to the luxury hotels where kitchen staff are gathered on their smoke breaks. The blue din from cell phone screens that shrouds the faces of everyone - the restaurant guests, the staff, the tourists, the locals, the kids, the adults - everyone’s face constantly basking in the glow of their own social media. The party lights that shoot into the night sky on the beach. The flickering candles at the swanky hotel lobby bar. The neon taco stand signage. Miami is full of light energy, all of the lights, that bring the entire city to life in every possible way.

This collection of paintings inspired by Art Week in Miami explores themes of class division, and the palpable cultural differences that exist within one city (that ironically seems to have its own sense of cultural identity that seems highly influenced by the working class). This collection also explores the theme of art, and what is considered to be art according to the viewer (ie: graffiti vs. abstract art, landscape photography vs. landscape painting, photojournalism vs. portraiture).
